Sustainability
What sustainability means to us
To us sustainability means using our knowledge and technology in ways that benefit our surroundings and in every way possible the environment. We are all part of a greater ecosystem, both as individuals and as a team. We believe that the corporate part of this ecosystem is required to contribute to a more sustainable world.
We at Ionautics work towards this in many different ways.
HiPIMS
The HiPIMS division uses our non-toxic sputtering technology to increase performance and prolong the lifespan of our clients’ products at a reduced material footprint. We deliver the required hardware and software on-site to enable production closer to the end-user, which decreases transportation costs and emissions.
e-CVD
The e-CVD division has developed a new CVD method that uses free electrons in a plasma for surface chemical redox reactions (the method is referred to as e-CVD).
This circumvents the need for complex and unstable molecules to react as reducing agents in the deposition of thin-film coatings. Thus, making the method inherently more sustainable than traditional CVD since the use of, and thereby also the
synthesis and purification of, molecular reducing agents are omitted. Therefore also generating a safer work environment for the industry.
Nanostructures
The Nanostructures division’s technology truly is a technology with endless possibilities and has the potential to make a significant change to several different markets. However, as we already stated, we have a genuine interest in a global sustainable future. As we all are aware, the use of fossil fuels releases vast amounts of greenhouse gases, such as Carbon Dioxide and Methane, and is the largest driving force for climate change. Therefore, we need environmentally friendly alternatives for a global net-zero transition. For this, green hydrogen will take an important part in several sectors, such as energy, industrial, and transportation. Furthermore, exposing the electricity market to competition will enable environmentally friendly fuels to develop into accessible alternatives on a global level. Therefore, we have chosen to focus on the hydrogen market since we believe hydrogen to be a crucial part in the sustainable future.
The hydrogen market aims to produce 40% of all Green Hydrogen through PEM electrolysis with renewable sources of energy. Today the production of hydrogen through PEM electrolysis requires both iridium and platina. Unfortunately, these noble metals are both expensive and rare which makes it impossible for production to scale up. The European Union’s goal is to reduce the needed amount to one-tenth of the amount that is needed today. With the usage of our tailormade nanostructures in PEM electrolysis, we bring that number down to one-thirtieth – today. This leads us to believe that our technology will be the future of hydrogen production and enable hydrogen to become a strong competitor in the global fuel market.
